How to Discuss Difficult Subjects with Your Kids

Talking to our kids about tough stuff can be challenging. Not because the desire to inform them isn’t there, it’s just not quite knowing how to start the conversation. This video is meant to help start the conversation. I’d recommend listening to it first, without kids present so you have time to consider the message. When you are ready, sit down with your kids and watch it together. After you watch it, it is helpful to:

  1. Check for Clarity –
    • What would you say that video is about?
    • Did it make sense to you?
    • Do you think you have ever known a ‘tricky’ person?
  2. Validate (Whatever their answer is!) –
    • You did a good job listening to the message.
    • I could tell you were paying attention.
    • You are asking really good questions.
  3. Create your own scenarios –
    • What would you do if someone at the park wanted you to walk to their car with them?
    • Let’s role play. Do you want to be the ‘tricky’ person or do you want me to be the ‘tricky’ person.
    • How would you describe a ‘tricky’ person?
  4. Watch the video again and check to see if they have any more questions or comments.
